NEWS: New Short Film Released by Royal Ballet’s Alexander Campbell

The short film co-created by Royal Ballet Principal Alexander Campbell and Anthoula Syndica-Drummond was released today.

Titled ‘Where We Are’, this short film features five dancers choreographed by Rambert’s Hannah Rudd to an original score composed by Sophie Cotton which features a performance by violinist Naomi Burrell.

Collaborating while in lockdown, the original work is performed by Jeffrey Cirio, Hannah Rudd, Francesca Hayward, Clemmie Sveaas and Alexander Campbell.

Campbell, working with co-creator Anthoula Syndica-Drummond, was inspired to coordinate this talented crew of artists and friends to create something truly original for the public to enjoy while there are no ballet and dance productions live on stage due to the COVID-19 lockdown measures.

On his inspiration for the piece, co-creator Alexander Campbell said: “Dance taught me everything I know about discipline, perseverance, and life’s complexities. My message to all artists right now is this: please keep at it. We need you. The world needs you. I use this quote from Mikhail Baryshnikov because I think it’s a great example of how being exposed to art can change people’s perspectives. The idea was to demonstrate individuals experiencing all these emotions through their movement and their faces. “I’m so…” is the repetitive link drawing the viewer in to the evolving mood of the dancers, but the exact emotion is only occasionally verbalised; we see it in their eyes, face, bodies, as they say: “I’m so…” and then we see it elevated, expanded and heightened through the movement.”

The video is available to watch on the artists’ Instagram channels via IGTV.
