The festival has announced details of its 2020 online festival, running from the 19th to the 26th July.
This upcoming festival will see classical music stars coming together to take part in an online festival set to open on the 19th July.
The Ryedale online festival will be opened by Isata Kanneh-Mason with an afternoon recital of Beethoven alongside classics from the American piano repertoire,streamed on the online platform RyeStream at 3pm. This will then be followed by seven more concerts that will be streamed across the week.
The full programme of concerts is as follows:
- Pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason will open the festival with an afternoon recital of Beethoven’s Sonata No. 2 in A Major alongside classics from the American piano repertoire including Gershwin’s Three Preludes
Sunday 19 July, streamed at 3pm from from All Saints’ Church in Helmsley.
- Violinist Rachel Podger will play baroque masterpieces from the beautiful pre-Raphaelite chapel of Castle Howard. Rachel’s performance will take in a breathtaking set of repertoire of Biber’s The Guardian Angel, a stunning work that portrays a guardian angel with a child, Bach’s Cello Suite No. 6 in D major and Vilsmayr’s Partita 5 in G minor, Monday 20 July, streamed at 11am from from the Chapel at Castle Howard.
- Clarinettist Matthew Hunt and pianist Tim Horton will perform together in a concert exploring fantasy in music, encompassing Jörg Widmann’s Fantasie, Schumann’s Fantasiestücke and John Ireland’s
Fantasy Sonata Tuesday 21 July, streamed at 1pm from Long Gallery at Castle Howard. - Anna Lapwood will offer a performance of virtuoso organ playing, brimming with the work of Bach, Barbara Heller and Frescobaldi amongst others. Anna’s recital will be livestreamed from the elegant St Michael’s Church in Coxwold, one of Yorkshire’s most ancient churches. Wednesday 22 July, streamed at 11am from from St Michael’s Church, Coxwold.
- Cellist Abel Selaocoe will present a concert drawn from the music and stories of his native South Africa, interleaved with Baroque masterpieces including Dall’Abaco’s Capriccio No. 3 in E flat major
Thursday 23 July, streamed at 6pm from All Saints’ Church, Helmsley.
- Pianist and Artistic Director Christopher Glynn and soprano Rowan Pierce will perform in a programme entitled Music for a While where the pair will present a winning mix of traditional songs and works by Purcell, Schubert, Schumann and Grieg .Friday 24 July, streamed at 9pm from All Saints’ Church, Helmsley.
- Violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen and Christopher Glynn will play Elgar, pairing the great composer’s Chanson de Nuit and Chanson de Matin with his Violin Sonata in E Minor to invoke the comforting scenes of the English countryside. Saturday 25 July, streamed at 3pm from All Saints’ Church, Helmsley.
- Streetwise Opera performers will join Roderick Williams, Brodsky Quartet and Genesis Sixteen to perform Schubert’s The Linden Tree. The Carducci Quartet will then close the online festival by taking to the adorned and expansive Great Hall of Castle Howard, filling the magnificent space with Phillip Glass’s String Quartet No. 3 Mishima and Beethoven’s String Quartet in F minor, Op. 95 No. 11 Serioso. Sunday 26 July, streamed at 6pm from the Great Hall at Castle Howard.
Artistic Director Christopher Glynn said: ‘Our new online platform is there to throw open the doors of the Ryedale Festival this summer. It’s there to share the joy of classical music with more people than could ever fit into one venue. And it’s there to support musicians at a time when they have never needed it more. We all miss the feeling of community that is only ever fully present when people gather in a room and fill it with a sense of anticipation. It’s an alchemy we will value all the more when normal life is restored. But in the meantime, we hope this online festival will bring pleasure to music-lovers everywhere.’
