Having originally been set to open in the West End at the beginning of next year, it has been confirmed that Moulin Rouge! The Musical will now begin performances at the Piccadilly Theatre in the Autumn of 2021.

In a statement released today the show show has said: “We’re moving our London performance dates to Autumn 2021 to ensure the show is perfectly SPECTACULAR when it arrives! We cannot wait to see the West End shine bright like a diamond once more. To Truth, Beauty, Freedom, and Love!”

The musical is based on the 2001 film and follows the story of aspiring writer Christian and dancer Satine as they fall in love. But Satine becomes under increasing pressure to appease new owner of the Moulin Rouge the  Duke of Monroth, whose money will help to keep the venue running.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is directed by Alex Timbers (Here Lies Love at National Theatre, Tony Award®-nominated for Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and Peter and the Starcatcher) and features a book by John Logan (Tony Award® for Red, three-time Academy Award nominee, including for Gladiator and The Aviator). The creative team also includes choreography by Sonya Tayeh (Lucille Lortel Award and Obie Award for Kung Fu, and Emmy winner), and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Justin Levine (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson).

In a further statement, Carmen Pavlovic, CEO of Global Creatures and producer of Moulin Rouge! The Musical said of the change, “Whilst we’re disappointed to be opening a little later than originally planned, we are committed to bringing Moulin Rouge! The Musical to London and look forward to being part of a revived West End.”

Casting and new dates for the West End production have yet to be announced.
