This new animated take on the story is not associated with the original Disney film.

Set to be co-directed by Guillermo Del Toro and Mark Gustafson, this new film based on The Adventures of Pinocchio by Italian writer Carlo Collodi will feature music by Alexandre Desplat and lyrics by del Toro and Katz.

Following the adventures of a young puppet brought to life, this new version of the story is set to star Ewan McGregor as Cricket, Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, David Bradley as Gepetto Finn Wolfhard and Gregory Mann in the title role.

Other confirmed cast members include: Christoph Waltz, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson and Burn Gorman. Details of the characters they will be playing have yet to be confirmed.

The film will have a script by del Toro and Patrick McHale. It is being produced by del Toro, as well as the Jim Henson Company’s Lisa Henson. Illustrator Gris Grimly, who first worked with del Toro in 2012 to conceive the visuals of the film, is credited with the original design for the Pinocchio character. The film’s puppets come from Mackinnon and Saunders (Corpse Bride).

Principle photography for the film began last Autumn, with work on it uninterrupted by Covid-19. A release date has yet to be announced .
