The star of The Prom and 42nd Street joined Seth Rudetsky for a fun-filled concert.
There is no denying the versatility of Beth Leavel’s career having started out in 42nd Street, she then went on to appear in Young Frankenstein, Mamma Mia! and most recently The Prom.
The fact that she has appeared in some of the most joyful and feel-good musicals, gives those who watched this latest in The Seth Concert Series just what a vibrant person she is – with an extraordinary range of vocals of course.
This is shown in the way in which she doesn’t just perform a song, she offers background to the song and even a story involving the song. Highlighted as she is performing ‘I Only Have Eyes For You’ from 42nd Street, while at the same time explaining an unfortunate incident while performing it really enhanced the performance.
It is clear that throughout her career she has enjoyed playing some strong female characters including Rizzo in Grease, Dorothy Brock in a revival of 42nd Street and Donna in Mamma Mia! – this is reflected through her powerful and impressive vocals.
During this concert, her performances of ‘Some People’ from Gypsy and ‘I Get a Kick Out of You’ are really impressive, offering her a real opportunity to belt and enjoy herself. Yet there was also a lovely tender moment as Leavel and her partner Adam Heller joined in for a duet of ‘You’re Just In Love’ that made the concert feel really personal and intimate.
As always, the diversity of the song choices are wonderful, with ‘There are Worse Things I Could Do’ and ‘Broadway Baby’, allowing the audience in this concert to really see what a spirited and lively performer Leavel is. She really is a performer that is full of energy and enthusiasm and would clearly be a delight to see performing live on stage.
Overall, once again this was a lovely and charming concert that really covered Leavel’s career with great thought and insight.
