It has been announced that writer and comedian Amber Ruffin will be helping to co-write the new musical adaptation of Some Like it Hot, said to be heading to the stage next year.

Ruffin is known for being the host and writer of The Amber Ruffin Show on the NBC streaming platform Peacock. She also remains on the writing team on Late Night With Seth Meyers – for which she received an Emmy nomination. She joins the previously announced Matthew López ( The Inheritance) to work on the book for the new musical.

Billy Wilder’s film had previously been adapted for another musical titled Sugar in 1972, which featured a book by  Peter Stone, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Bob Merrill. It was first performed in the West End at the Prince Edward Theatre in 1992, starring Tommy Steele.

This new adaptation will feature a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray), with direction and choreography by Casey Nicholaw.

The story follows two musicians as they are forced to go on the run after witnessing a mob-connected murder, disguising themselves as two women in a female band. The 1959 film starred Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe and is considered to be one of the greatest film comedies of all time.

The musical was originally set to have a try-out run in Chicago this March, before opening on Broadway later this year, but due to the pandemic will now head to Broadway next year.
