Disney is set to bring another classic villain into the spotlight, with what looks set to be a dark backstory to how Cruella became a dog-snatching villain.
There are two sides to each story – at least that is how the expression goes, but unlike in Maleficent this new film about Cruella isn’t simply going for a sympathetic side to the character – but rather exposing the path that she took to how we see her in 101 Dalmatians.
This newly released trailer, while not giving much away about the plot or how Cruella’s story unfolds, what we do know is that the story sees her attempting to make a name for herself in the fashion industry – wanting to be noticed by the high society but along the way becomes the villain that we all know.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and with a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, it is clear that this back story is certainly going to be a lot darker than many other live action films that Disney have made in recent years. But we can also be certain that it will certainly be a stylish affair in terms of costumes – in particular I can’t wait to see what Cruella’s costumes are like!
In terms of casting, of course we all remember the sheer brilliancy of Glenn Close’s interpretation of the character, but Emma Stone’s upcoming performance certainly looks as though it will have a sharp edge to it that will enhance the character well. The cool and composed way in which she enters the room at a party in the trailer really offers a tantalising hint of just how chilling and ambitious this character really is.
Elsewhere, strong casting is in evidence, with Emma Thompson and Mark Strong also lined up for roles in the film. It will be interesting – particularly with Thompson to see how their characters fit in with the story and how their interactions with Cruella highlight aspects of her story.
What is for certain, it is going to be a intriguing watch when its released later this year.
