It has been announced that Walter Tevis’ book that inspired the Netflix series is set to be made into a stage musical.
Although the musical is set to be unrelated to the Netflix series, which has won numerous awards since it premiered in December, it will be adapted from Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel.
The Queen’s Gambit follows the story of young chess prodigy Beth Harmon, who then goes onto find international success while dealing with addiction, sexism and her traumatic past.
Talking about the news Level Forward CEO Adrienne Becker and producer Julia Dunetz who are set to produce the musical said: “It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theater. Told through a brave and fresh point of view, audiences are already sharing in the friendship and fortitude of the story’s inspiring women who energize and sustain Beth Harmon’s journey and ultimate triumph. The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward.”
While a release date,creatives and more for the show are to be revealed, it is expected the new musical is set to open on Broadway.
The recent Netflix series starred Anya Taylor-Joy, who recently won Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards for her performance as Beth.
