REVIEW: Broadway Soul Volume 2 by Kyle Taylor Parker

This follow up to the 2019 album cleverly uses songs from a variety of different Broadway musicals to create a whole new story of love.

Featuring songs from Broadway musicals including The Music Man, Follies and The Wiz, this stunning and pleasurable album from the star of Kinky Boots and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is well worth adding to your collection.

Filled with soul and joy, this collection of songs has been cleverly curated to tell one story of love and feels almost like a new musical in its own right. With songs such as the beautiful and sophisticated rendition of ‘Til There Was You’ and the soulfully performed duet with Blaine Krauss on ‘What About Love?’ there is a strong sense of storytelling that shines through.

Vocally, Kyle Taylor Parker shows a great versatility adapting to each style of song with ease and style that can make you imagine him in a huge variety of parts on Broadway (and hopefully here in London if we are lucky). In particular, I enjoyed the bold way in which he performs ‘Some Enchanted Evening/All I Do is Dream of You’ – two songs that surprisingly work well together thanks to the way in which they have been arranged.

Throughout the album, there is a real sense of joy and heart right at the centre of that makes it easy to enjoy, each song just merging from one to the other with great charm. With songs such as ‘What Would I Do If I Could Feel?’ from the musical The Wiz, there is plenty of vibrancy musically that catches the attention of the listener, while Parker makes the lyrics shine effortlessly.

It really is an album that is difficult not to be charmed by with its refreshing approach and reimagining these familiar songs for those familiar with them and those who are just discovering them. Particular highlights include ‘You Could Drive a Person Crazy’ – a really lovely duet with Natalie Joy Johnson that is filled with heaps of personality really puts a smile on the listeners face, while ‘Buddy’s Blues’ is just one example of how this album is consistently able to surprise.

Overall, Broadway Soul Volume 2 is a strong and charismatic album that is well worth listening to if you are looking for something new. Highly recommended.
