The theatre company have announced that Tonderai Munyevu’s Mugabe, My Dad & Me will play at the York Theatre Royal next month with tour dates for next year to be announced.
Running at the York Theatre Royal from the 9th to the 18th September, this English Touring Theatre production has been co-produced with York Theatre Royal, in association with Alison Holder.
April, 1980. The British colony of Rhodesia becomes the independent nation of Zimbabwe. A born free, Tonderai Munyevu is part of the hopeful next generation from a country with a new leader, Robert Mugabe.
Mugabe, My Dad & Me charts the rise and fall of one of the most controversial politicians of the 20th century through the personal story of Tonderai’s family and his relationship with his father.
Directed by John R Wilkinson (Hello and Goodbye, Swallows and Amazons, Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down at the York Theatre Royal), the show will be performed by Tonderai Munyevu and Millicent Chapanda. The creative team will include designer Nicolai Hart-Hansen and sound design by Nigel Glasgow.
English Touring Theatre will return to national touring in the autumn opening with Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in September, co-produced with Curve and Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse, and directed by the 2019 RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award winner Anthony Almeida. The production opens at Curve, Leicester on 8th September, with previews from the 3rd September, before touring to Liverpool, Canterbury, Ipswich, Theatr Clwyd, and concludes in Southampton on 30th October. The cast is Sam Alexander (Gooper), Teresa Banham (Big Mama), Peter Forbes (Big Daddy), Oliver Johnstone (Brick), Siena Kelly (Maggie), Suzette Llewellyn (Doctor Baugh), Minal Patel (Reverend Tooker) and Shanaya Rafaat (Mae).
