Nestled in the heart of Leicester Square’s Hippodrome Casino, this fun filled experience is ideal for musical theatre fans looking for a night out.
Ever wanted to go somewhere where you can sing along to songs from musicals such as Guys & Dolls, My Fair Lady, Grease and Singin’ in the Rain? Well look no further than Overtures – a piano bar that is based in the Hippodrome Casino on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays that plays a diverse range of musical theatre songs performed by talented pianists.
Open from eight in the evening, this is a wonderfully relaxed environment set in the heart of the West End to celebrate the world of musical theatre – as a huge musical theatre fan it was wonderful to have a place where I could sit back, enjoy a drink and sing to my hearts content to some of my favourite songs – including ‘My Favourite Things’ from The Sound of Music. My friend who perhaps didn’t recognise as many songs as me also had a glorious time singing along to songs from Grease – in between us catching up and gossiping – the vibe of the venue is warm and welcoming and you can choose to sing along as much or as little as you want. Half the fun is trying to guess which song is going to be performed next!
Hosted by the wonderfully charismatic Jennifer Hepburn, the accomplished pianists Nicole Johnson and Simon David, move swiftly and elegantly through a great collection of songs – dedicating a good length of time to each musical selected, from classic musicals from well known composers to those who are more contemporary to ensure that there is something for all musical fans of all eras to enjoy. The one problem was – I didn’t want it to end.
The overall vibe of the experience is one of warmth, celebration and joy that makes it ideal for anyone either coming out of the theatre and not wanting the evening to end or those in search of a elegant way to spend an evening celebrating the world of musical theatre. It is well worth paying a visit.
