We round up the reviews for the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre and Chichester Festival Theatre co-production of Martin McDonagh‘s The Beauty Queen of Leenane.

WhatsOnStage: *** “It’s all engaging enough stuff but just manages to miss the mark with its levels of toxicity and torment on display. The comedy shines through but the savagery is more difficult to find.”

The Guardian: *** “This is a tight, neat co-production by Chichester Festival theatre and the Lyric Hammersmith, directed by Rachel O’Riordan with Fitzgerald as a commanding, angry presence, her position in the world defined by small victories over her mother.”

Broadway World: **** “At times, the writing can be a little glib, a little too neat and a dated understanding of mental illness goes largely unquestioned, but this is a thrilling production of a landmark play, blessed by a magnificent cast and unimproveable staging.”

The Times: *** “The performances are so intense that you can almost overlook the contrivances in the script. Twenty-five years after it first bowled over critics, Martin McDonagh’s debut play is back, snarling, sobbing and sometimes breaking into a cruel death’s-head grin.”

The Stage: **** “Revival of Martin McDonagh’s classic play that locates the beating heart behind the dark comedy.”

iNews: **** “It’s gasp-inducingly cruel, yet Fitzgerald and Craigie make us feel, and fear, for them too, while Best’s gentle, lonely Pato is heartbreaking, an unglamorous yet almost miraculous chance of salvation.”

British Theatre Guide: “You won’t leave this play singing a happy song, but I think you will leave with thoughtfulness, plenty to discuss, and appreciation of a brilliantly written play, expertly performed.”

West End Best Friend: *** “It is an interesting concept and still worth the watch, 100%. The acting is strong, the set design is rustic and intimate. The costumes are very reminiscent of the early 90s and the Northern Irish accent is authentic and believable. Despite the confusion, all the theatrical elements blend beautifully, making it an overall enjoyable experience.”

The Telegraph: **** “This revival of Martin McDonagh’s 1996 grim, hilarious domestic drama at Chichester’s Minerva Theatre confirms it as a modern classic.”

The Beauty Queen of Leenane continues to play at the Chichester Festival Theatre until the 2nd October before transferring to the Lyric Hammersmith from the 9th October until the 6th November.
