This second collaborative album from the duo features a well selected collection of Cole Porter songs.
Following on from their 2014 album Cheek to Cheek, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga have collaborated once more for a classy but fun new album celebrating the work of Cole Porter that captures why they work well together as performers.
Featuring a mixture of familiar songs from the composer including ‘I Get a Kick Out of You’ and those perhaps less well known including a really lovely rendition of ‘I Concentrate on You’, it is clear that there is something for everyone on this well structured album that flows along with elegance and style.
Every song that has been selected for Love For Sale not only captures the charm and instant recognisability of Tony Bennett’s vocals but also just how versatile Lady Gaga’s own vocal style is. This can really be heard on songs such as ‘Love For Sale’ which highlights the mutual respect that each singer has for each other, while ‘Do I Love You’ shows real hidden depths to Lady Gaga’s ability to completely absorb herself in the style of music that is a complete contrast to her last album Chromatica.
While it seems as though there are real moments that are tinged with sadness as heard slightly on ‘So in Love’ and ‘Let’s Do it’ – the overall vibe of the album is filled with warmth and joy that clearly both had in recording Love for Sale.
But for me, the real highlights of the album come from a really lovely tender rendition of ‘Night and Day’ which has been gorgeously arranged in a way that makes it sound even more poignant, while ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ is given a joyful and uplifting rendition. The album comes to a close in a playful way with a really perky rendition of ‘You’re the Top’ that left me with a smile on my face.
Simple, elegant and immensely enjoyable – this is an album is a fitting tribute not only to Cole Porter’s timeless songs but also to Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga’s collaborative strength vocally.
