The production is set to run at the Southwark Playhouse from April.

Theatre company ViSiBLE, whose work focuses on later life has announced new dates and the cast for the upcoming world premiere of Five Characters in Search of A Good Night’s Sleep – which was postponed due to COVID-19 in 2020.

This new production devised by director Mike Alfreds and ViSiBLE’s Artistic Director Sonja Linden and the company, will play at the Southwark Playhouse from the 27th April until the 21st May. It is set to star Geraldine Alexander, Andrew Hawkins, Sally Knyvette, Gary Lilburn and Vincenzo Nicoli.

Five insomniacs try to make it through the night. From dusk to dawn, they struggle with a crisis in their lives which they must resolve by morning. Increasingly conscious of their shortening futures and lengthening pasts, they fill their nights with distracting activities, desperate sleep techniques, evaluations of their lives, delusions, fears, panics and utter foolishness as they prepare to face the day.

Five Characters in Search of a Good Night’s Sleep was developed over a period of two years, through a series of workshop in which all the material for the play was created by the actors. It follows on from the runs of two previous ViSiBLE shows at Southwark Playhouse, Who Do We Think We Are? and Roundelay.

Talking about the news of the production Sonja Linden said: “It feels wonderful and very special to reunite our fantastic cast of older actors to share this production, having had to postpone the 2020 run. In this show we explore the universal experience of sleep and those moments where it proves elusive, something that many, particularly as we get older can relate to.”

The production features set and costume design by Agnes Treplin, lighting by Neil Brinkworth and is produced by Alex Critoph.
