We chatted to Molly about starring in the world premiere of Terry Johnson’s The Sex Party at the Menier Chocolate Factory.

Hi Molly, how does it feel to be performing in the world première of Terry Johnson’s play? It’s a huge privilege, not only to be a part of new writing, but also to explore it in the room with the writer himself. It’s very exciting to help shape an original piece of work, and to witness it coming to life for a never-before-seen audience.
Could you explain what The Sex Party is about? At its core, the play provokes thoughts about our relationships; both with each other and with ourselves. Some that may seem blindingly obvious, and some of which we may never dream of admitting. Most of all I love how titillating the title is. Therefore, it’s safe to say; what happens at a sex party, stays at The Sex Party.
What was it that made you want to be part of this production? I saw Terry’s Mrs Henderson Presents while I was at drama school and was blown away with how bold it was. I read the first ten pages at my desk on a temp job and was totally seduced. Once I had read the whole play, I had no doubt in my mind that I wanted to be a part of it. The next thing I
knew, I was on the tube heading straight to the Menier to read in.

Could you tell me more about the character you play? I’m very excited to be playing a character that broaches conversations about sex positivity, power- dynamics in relationships, class-divide, and she contributes to the morality of the play in her own way. She certainly presents another generations approach which resonates with me also.
How have you found working on this production so far? Working with this company of actors is incredibly inspiring, particularly on new work. I have always felt so grateful to meet such vibrant and intelligent people and am learning so much everyday about style, about creative processes and how each character plays their part on the chess board.
How does it feel to be bringing the play to the Menier Chocolate Factory? The Chocolate Factory is home from home for me. It’s so wonderful to be back with this team again. The momentum for theatre has been building back up post-pandemic, and to be contributing to that in a space so close to my heart is as wonderful as ever.
