PREVIEW: Alcina, Royal Opera House

Richard Jones’s new staging of Handel’s Alcina arrives at the Royal Opera House from the 8th November.

No one can resist Alcina: she has lured many lovers to their demise. But when Ruggiero falls under her spell, his wife Bradamante dons a disguise that will leave everyone questioning whether, in an age of reason, love can conquer all. Friend or foe? Wife or husband? Lover or beast? On Alcina’s magic island, nothing is as it seems.

Wild fantasies and dark desires come to life in Richard Jones’s intoxicating new staging of Handel’s fantastical opera.

Featuring music by George Frideric Handel, Libretto by Antonio Marchi, designs by Antony McDonald and lighting design by Lucy Carter, Richard Jones’s new production heads to the Royal Opera House for a limited time only, performing from the 8th to the 26th November.

Meanwhile, this production sees the return of Lisette Oropesa returns to Covent Garden in the title role alongside Emily D’Angelo, Mary Bevan, Varduhi Abrahamyan andRupert Charlesworth. The performances are set to be conducted by Christian Curnyn.
