This reinterpreted adaptation of Thomas Middleton and William Rowley’s play will run at the Southwark Playhouse from the 28th September until the 28th October 2023.

Lazarus Theatre Company will return to the Southwark Playhouse this Autumn with a production of The Changeling, Thomas Middleton and William Rowley’s rarely performed play featuring an intense love-hate relationship, sexual tension, and murderous chaos.

Beatrice Joanna is betrothed to a man she does not like, let alone love. Along with her servant De Flores (by whom she is repulsed) she disposes of the suitor, but when it comes to payment De Flores wants more than money. Their decent into hellish madness haunted by ghosts and lunatics, propelled by sex and obsession, leads to one of the greatest climaxes of the English stage.

Director Ricky Dukes said: “Middleton and Rowley’s The Changeling is one of, if not, the best tragedies of the English Renaissance. It packs a punch, is entirely unapologetic, gutsy and full throttle, gloriously gory and theatrically daring. We can’t wait to return to Southwark Playhouse where we are transforming the auditorium into a Mad Men inspired in-the-round supercharged bunker. Things will definitely get messy. It’s going to be quite the ride.”

The creative team behind this new production includes: designs by Sorcha Corcoran, lighting design by Stuart Glover and is produced by Gavin Harrington-Odedra.
