We chatted to Eva about bringing her one woman show to London’s Arcola Theatre.

Hi Eva, how does it feel to be bringing Mustard to the Arcola Theatre? I’m so delighted to be bringing it to this beautiful venue. I am based in London, and it’s
my local theatre! I love the work the Arcola programmes, and their commitment to the environment and sustainable practices. I can’t think of a better London venue for MUSTARD.

Could you explain a bit more about what the show is about? It’s a one woman show about heartbreak, madness and how condiments are the ultimate
coping mechanism. It follows a girl who comes out of a really toxic relationship and becomes addicted to smearing mustard all over her body. It’s weird,
compelling, joyous and full of mustard.

How did the idea for the play come about? When I had an eating disorder years ago I was obsessed with mustard (low in calories but high in flavour). I wanted to write something about coping with something behind closed doors- eating disorders, addiction, whatever that might be- and the shame that comes with it. I also wanted to explore how heartbreak can really be the straw that breaks the camel’s back when it comes to mental health.

What can audiences expect from Mustard? You will laugh, cry and never look at a jar of mustard the same again!

How have you found the experience of bringing Mustard to the stage? I’ve loved every minute of this show, from writing and performing it, to touring it with
Fishamble: the New Play Company who have been incredibly supportive every step of the way.  It’s a real passion project and I’m so happy it’s finally getting a London run.
