Interview With…Katie Buchholz

We chatted to Katie about starring in the upcoming revival of Philip Ridley’s play which will play at the Park Theatre from the 11th May until the 3rd June.

What were your first impressions when you read the script? I remember being struck by how clever the play was. I think Philip Ridley has such a brilliant way of combining naturalistic dialogue with the stylised elements. Although it’s a dark play, I think it’s also a very beautiful piece.

How has it been working on the production so far? It’s been such a joy. The cast are all wonderful and Max Harrison, the director, creates such a lovely environment to work in. I love playing Debbie, especially since the way I see her has changed so much since we began rehearsals.

How does it feel to be bringing Leaves of Glass to the Park Theatre? I’ve always wanted to work at the Park. I think it puts on brilliant productions. I’m also excited about working in Park 90 as it’s so intimate and I think it will be great seeing our characters up close, sort of under a magnifying glass.

What do you think that audiences will take away from the play? The piece is about family, shared experience and how we relate to the past so I think that each member of the audience will connect to it in their own way and hopefully find themselves reflecting on their own experiences.  I also think on a simpler level the piece is a tense and thrilling story so I hope it will be a fascinating and entertaining watch.

Could you tell me more about the character you play? Debbie is the newly wed partner of one of the brothers. I love her because she’s driven and commanding in her relationship and in her life (she doesn’t take any crap!). She is unafraid to get exactly what she wants, but she has quite a unique way of going about it.

What have you enjoyed the most being part of this production? THE TEAM! I’ve loved working with the team. They’re incredibly talented and hard working but we’ve had a lot of fun in the room!
