Many of the late singer’s possessions will go on display at the auction house, before being sold at auction.

This summer, the auction house will exhibit Freddie Mercury’s private collection ahead of auctioning it of, having acquired the collection from the singer’s close friend Mary Austin who has looked after his Garden Lodge home in and everything in it for the last thirty years.

From the 5th August, more than 1500 items from Mercury’s collection will be on display for a month long take over Sotheby’s London galleries in a celebration of the instantly recognisable and one of a kind artist. Items on display will include stage costumes, handwritten lyrics, fine and decorative arts and a trove of personal belongings.

Highlights to expect to see will include: Mercury’s crown and accompanying cloak worn for the finale rendition of God Save The Queen during his last tour with Queen, handwritten lyrics to We Are The Champions and Killer Queen and a lavish ceremonial military-style jacket created for Freddie Mercury’s 39th Birthday Party Drag Ball.

Meanwhile, those visiting the exhibition will also be able to see his personal collection of arts and objects Mercury acquired over the years since first buying the Georgian-style villa in 1980.

Prior to London, the collection will also go on tour New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. The exhibition will close in London on the 5th September, which would have been the singer’s 77th birthday.

After the exhibition closes, the collection will then go on sale in six auctions in September, each one devoted to a different aspect of Mercury’s life.
