The production will run at the theatre from the 15th February until the 23rd March.
It has been announced that following its runs in Stratford and UK tour, The Merchant of Venice 1936 will head to London from February.
Directed and adapted by Brigid Larmour, the West End run of the production will see Tracy-Ann Oberman (EastEnders, Doctor Who) continuing in the role of Shylock. Also reprising their roles are Raymond Coulthard as Antonio and Arragon, Hannah Morrish as Portia, Gavin Fowler as Bassanio, Jessica Dennis as Mary and Nerissa, Grainne Dromgoole as Jessica, Xavier Starr as Gratiano, Alex Zur as Yuval/The Duke/Balthasar/Blackshirt, and Nancy Farino as Stefania/Blackshirt.
Shylock a widow, single mother and survivor of attacks on Jewish people in Russia, runs a small business from her home in Cable Street. Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists plan a march through the Jewish East End and a fragile peace is shattered. Into Shylock’s world enters antisemitic Antonio in need of a loan, a dangerous deal is made. Will Shylock take her revenge? A powerful reminder of a key moment in British history.
The creative team behind the production includes: designs by Liz Cooke, lighting by Rory Beaton, sound by Sarah Weltman and composition by Erran Baron Cohen. Annabel Arden and Richard Katz are the artistic associates, Matt Ledbury is the production manager and Greta Zabulyte is the video editor.
Further cast and creative team has yet to be announced.
