NEWS: Vanessa Williams to Star in The Devil Wears Prada Musical

The London production is set to begin performances at the Dominion Theatre this October.

It has been announced that singer and actress Vanessa Williams is set to star as Miranda Priestley in the upcoming production of the musical, which will have a preview engagement this Summer at the Theatre Royal Plymouth prior to opening in the West End in October.

Vanessa Williams has had an impressive career, having sold millions of records worldwide, including her rendition of “Colors of the Wind,” from Disney’s Pocahontas, which won the Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Meanwhile, her stage credits include recently appearing on Broadway in in the World Premiere of Selina Fillinger’s comedy, POTUS: or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying To Keep Him Alive while in the West End she starred in City Of Angels (the run of which was cut short due to the pandemic). On screen, she is best known for her Emmy- and SAG Award-Nominated role of “Wilhelmina Slater” in ABC’s hit series Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives. Talking about the news she said: Bringing Miranda Priestly to life in the West End is an absolute dream come true. Gird your loins, folks.

Further casting for the production has yet to be announced.

The Devil Wears Prada is a brand new musical, based on the hit film and best selling novel by Lauren Weisberger, which features an original score by music icon, Elton John, lyrics by singer-songwriter Shaina Taub and a  book by Kate Wetherhead.

Fresh out of college, aspiring journalist Andy scores a job at the prestigious Runway magazine working for fashion’s most powerful and terrifying icon — editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly. Sacrificing her personal life to meet Miranda’s impossible demands, Andy finds herself seduced by the glamorous world she once despised. How far will she go to succeed… and will it be worth selling her soul to get what she’s always wanted?

The production is directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, whose previous credits include Kinky Boots, Legally Blonde, Pretty Woman and Hairspray. Those also involved with the production includes: set design by Tim Hatley (Life of Pi, Back to the Future), costume design by Gregg Barnes (Some Like It Hot, Legally Blonde), lighting design by Bruno Poet (The Tina Turner Musical, Frankenstein), sound design by Gareth Owen (Come From Away, & Juliet) and casting by Jill Green CDG.
