Here’s a guide to some of the new theatre opening in London for audiences to enjoy in January.

Scissorhandz, Southwark Playhouse: if you enjoyed Tim Burton’s classic Edward Scissorhands, you might want to head to the Southwark Playhouse to catch this new musical adaptation which features music by a range of artists such as Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga & Alanis Morissette. Described as a celebration of those who dare to be different, this is set to be a fun way to get the year started!
Oedipus, Old Vic Theatre: Ella Rickson’s adaptation of Sophocles’s play begins performances at the Old Vic Theatre from the 21st January. It is set to star Academy Award winner Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody, No Time To Die) and Olivier Award winner Indira Varma (Present Laughter, Game of Thrones) and is co-directed by Matthew Warchus and Hofesh Shechter.

Elektra, Duke of York’s Theatre: Brie Larson is set to star as the title role in Daniel Fish’s production of this classic Greek tragedy when it begins performances in the West End from the 13th January. The cast is also set to include: Patrick Vaill as Orestes, Stockard Channing as Clytemnestra, Marième Diouf as Chrysothemis and Greg Hicks as Aegisthus.
Cirque Du Soleil’s Corteo, Royal Albert Hall: the famous circus company arrives in London once more, this time with its production of Corteo. Expect plenty of dazzling acrobatics and mesmerising stunts to capture the imagination. It will be performed from the 9th January until the 2nd March.

Kyoto, @Sohoplace: following its world premiere at Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson’s play focusing on the Kyoto the first international treaty to cut emissions and a historic moment in global climate legislation heads to London from the 9th January until the 3rd May.
Firebird, King’s Head Theatre: from the 9th January until the 9th February, the King’s Head Theatre will present the stage adaptation of Peeter Rebane and Tom Prior’s 2021 film which premiered at BFI Flare: London’s LGBTQI+ Film Festival. It tells the story of a young soldier who embarks on an affair with a charismatic fighter pilot on an Air Force Base in Soviet-occupied Estonia at the height of 1970s Communist rule.

The Years, Harold Pinter Theatre: the Almeida Theatre production will officially open in the West End on the 24th January. Based on Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux’s book, the production stars: Deborah Findlay, Romola Garai (in performances until the 8th March), Gina McKee, Anjli Mohindra and Harmony Rose-Bremner.
Three Sisters, Sam Wanamaker Playhouse: for the first time, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse will present a production of a Chekhov play in a world premiere new adaptation by playwright Rory Mullarkey. It will run at the theatre from the 31st January until the 19th April.
