Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult star in this new thriller directed by Justin Kurzel.
The Guardian: *** “Kurzel contrives a solid, vehement film, with Law and Hoult proving to be interestingly cast; there are well-turned action sequences and on-the-nose dramatic beats about white-power fanatics pursuing their gruesome dream while the sweaty, unhappy good guys obsess about the job and neglect their families.”
Rte.ie: ***** “Indeed, for such a timely and important film, it was a shock to hear Baylin recently tell Backstory Magazine on YouTube that they had “a really hard time getting the movie made”, amid budget and time constraints, before all the pieces ultimately fell into place in such a powerful way here.”
Roger Ebert.com: *** 1/2 “Unlike most other true-crime films, “The Order” isn’t out to titillate or digress into exploitation. The film instead heeds to a strict hold on tone, mood and pacing that doesn’t aim to manipulate the viewer but to slowly unravel them to the point of feeling as hollowed out as Husk. In the process, it furiously tears us apart.”
The Hollywood Reporter: “The echoes between events in the film and what’s been happening in the U.S. since the 2016 presidential election are impossible to miss. And although DP Adam Arkapaw and production designer Karen Murphy’s uncanny recreations of ‘80s-era Washington are impressive to behold, there are moments when you start to wonder if the story is taking place then or now.”
BBC.com: *** “Mathews seems to be a lot better at his job than his opponents are. While the FBI agents have a tendency to bungle their operations, and Husk himself is a recklessly impulsive mess, the tall, handsome and polite Mathews gets to make polished speeches about his beliefs, and to plan and execute his crimes with expert efficiency. Maybe it’s an accurate portrayal, but it verges on coming across as a positive one. I can’t help worrying that people who share Mathews’s warped views might appreciate The Order more than Kurzel would want them to.”
Variety: “this could well be the most searing, lived-in performance of Law’s career.”
Deadline: “More frightening are the reminders, sprinkled through the script and in some sober end-titles, that while The Order’s survivors are still behind bars, their heirs are still ready for war.”
Vulture.com: “Justin Kurzel’s The Order is an absorbing, beautifully shot, impressively acted crime thriller of the kind we don’t see much on our theater screens anymore.”
The Order is out in cinemas on the 27th December.
