We chatted with Shiloh about starring in Belly of the Beast at the Finborough Theatre until the 1st February.

Hi Shiloh, how does it feel to be part of Saana Sze’s play? This play is so important. At times it feels like a call to arms and other times like walking down memory lane… it really is pleasure to be able to tell this story each night.
What can you tell us about ‘Belly of the Beast’? ‘Belly Of The Beast’ is a special show! It explores the complexities of institutions and how restricting they can be when your existence isn’t deemed to be the “norm”. For many of us, that introduction starts with school.
What was it about the story that grabbed your attention? I think it was the recognition that we are not a monolith and our lives have many chapters, so we all change. The audience get to meet “the Martha’s” – the same person but at completely different stages in their lives. The personal becomes political for Martha and playing them grow into the person who would have inspired them in their youth is really wholesome.
How has it been working on the production so far? It’s been a beautiful journey. Our rehearsal process flew by! And the show has inspired many insightful conversations around the differences, but also similarities, in our experiences.
How would you describe the show in three words? Hmm… Playful! Insightful. And wholesome.
What can you tell us about your character? NowMartha starts the play preparing for an interview for their dream job… to become an English teacher! And on the journey they grapple with the decision of how much of themselves to bring to the workplace in light of the recent controversy surrounding schools and LGBTQ+ experiences.
