Interview With….Trevor Ashley

Hi Trevor, how does it feel to be reprising your role as Roger De Bris? I absolutely adore him! Slipping back into those sparkly shoes—and that chandelier of a
gown—is pure joy. Getting to keep it gay in the West End? It’s a dream come true for this
boy from Oz. I’m having the time of my life.

What do you think is the key to Mel Brooks’ comedy genius? Mel isn’t afraid to GO THERE—loudly, proudly, and with jazz hands. He pushes every boundary, says the unsayable, and somehow keeps it completely tongue-in-cheek. His comedy is fearless, razor-sharp, and utterly ridiculous—in the best possible way. He’s the king of satire.

What have you enjoyed most about being part of The Producers? Honestly? The people—and the laughter. Our cast and crew are a dream to work with, and
the audiences are just feral with joy. Night after night, you hear belly laughs echoing
through the theatre. It’s pure theatrical magic. You leave the stage, and the audience leaves the building, both feeling better than when they walked in.

How does it feel to be part of bringing the musical back to the West End? It’s incredibly special. I saw the original Broadway production when I was twenty and it
absolutely blew my mind. To now be part of the first ever West End revival—and making my musical theatre West End debut at the same time? It’s massive. Total pinch-me moment.

What drew you to the character of Roger De Bris? Let’s be real—I’d play anything in this show! I actually played Franz in Australia years ago, but Roger was always the dream. He’s one of the great comic roles: outrageous, endearing, and totally fabulous. He ticked all the boxes for me as a performer. I’m thrilled—and
bedazzled—to be bringing him back.
