Interview With…Che Walker

Hi Che, how has it been working on Mama Goose so far? Working on Mama Goose has been a joy! I am well out of my comfort zone as I have never sung or danced in a show before – I also have to fly! Tonderai and Vikki are so supportive, and both bring warmth and wit to the process. The cast are amazingly talented and watching their work grow day by day is very exciting and inspiring.

What do you love the most about pantomimes? Pantomimes are very important because it’s usually the first theatre experience a child has- so it better be good! The traditions – The Dame, The Boy, the jokes, the ‘oh yes you are’ have all evolved and adapted to modern times. There’s also a chance to mock our rulers and leaders, which is much needed in these times.

What was your first experience of pantomime like? I believe that my first panto was Cinderella at Stratford East a million years ago, but I can’t be sure.

What can you tell us about your character Gary the Goose? Gary The Goose is a lovable cockney geezer who is the last of the golden geese. He’s quite a rough fellow but also very sensitive and loving.

How would you describe this take on the classic Mother Goose story? This take on Mama Goose manages to be very subversive and irreverent at the same time as honouring the traditions of panto and the themes of the ancient story.

What are you most looking forward to about performing this show for
audiences?
I’m looking forward to meeting the rest of the cast- the audience! Panto is pure democracy.
