This live adaptation of the 2016 animated film is set to be released in cinemas in July 2026.
Disney has now released a teaser trailer for its upcoming live action version of Moana, which stars Catherine Lagaʻaia in the title role and Dwayne Johnson returning as demigod Maui.
The cast also includes: John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Moana’s mother Sina and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
As with the animated film, the story follows Moana as she embarks on an epic adventure to restore prosperity to her community with the help of Maui.
This live action film will feature all of the songs from the original film, with hints of this heard in the trailer.
Moana is directed by Thomas Kail, with Dwayne Johnson among the producers and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the tunes for the original film, also listed as a producer. The original Moana, Auliʻi Cravalho, serves as an executive producer.
