We take a look at what is being said about Andy Fickman’s production based on the classic book and films.
All That Dazzles: **** “Overall, Freaky Friday is an entertaining musical that, despite its flaws, delivers belly laughs and moving moments. Whilst the story may feel a little rushed at times, the production’s charm and humour make it an enjoyable evening, and a UK premiere that Manchester should be proud to host. It proves that if you truly wish to understand another person, you should forget about walking a mile in their shoes and try living in their body instead.”
Beyond the Curtain.co.uk: *** “Overall, its fun and uplifting, flawed and a little cliched in its writing, and its tendency to turn energy levels up to 11 (apart from in ‘Parents Lie’, another edgier, thankfully much slower number, which isn’t afraid to extrapolate the imperfection of parenting). Its best moments are either its most subtle, or its witty lyricism. It’s built-in popularity and captive audience should ensure it succeeds both at HOME and abroad.”
WhatsOnStage: *** “It may not be flawless, but it’s undoubtedly fun: bright, brisk, and buoyed by performances that radiate joy and enthusiasm.”
Manchester Theatres.com: **** 1/2 ” The whole cast were magnificent and brought their best. It’s very clear that a lot of love and effort has been poured into this show, and you would be sorely missing out if you don’t go!”
Theatre & Tonic: ***** “It’s comedic, full of life, and genuinely heartwarming. Even on a rainy Monday evening, it still manages to give the audience that Friday feeling. I’d recommend this to any and all this festive season – it’s a must-see.”
Theatre Reviews North: *** 1/2 “What does work is the comic body-swap acting of the two leads, Rebecca Lock as mum Katherine playing hilariously in sulky-teenage mode, and Jena Pandya as Ellie the teen, hosting the soul of her keen but up-tight mum for the day. It could be confusing if the acting weren’t absolutely on point. And what fabulous voices. Also quite wonderful is the powerful voice of Tori Scott, playing Katherine’s assistant Tori (if it weren’t already confusing enough!). And there’s some wonderfully precise vocal runs from Max Mirza as Adam.”
West End Wilma: *** “Freaky Friday is a tricky show to review because it has so much potential. The cast is strong, the music is engaging and the choreography is excellent. The script and direction hold it back from reaching the magical heights it could achieve.”
British Theatre Guide: ” As a piece of unthreatening family entertainment for the festive period, it’s fine: it’s bright and colourful, fairly entertaining and mildly amusing with a happy ending and a moral message, but overall, the material feels a bit thin for what the premise promises.”
Freaky Friday continues to play at HOME in Manchester until the 10th January 2026.
