REVIEW: Survive by Lewis Capaldi (EP)

Lewis Capaldi keeps things wonderfully down to earth and honest on his latest EP on which he confronts the darker sides of life but with tinges of hope for the future.

This is the singer’s first new body of work since in 2023 he decided to take a break to focus on his health and it really tells a story of the journey that he has been on.

On every track, there is real depth of emotion and rawness on display. Starting with ‘Survive’ which is a story of overcoming all kinds of struggles both physical and mentally. The fact is that musically it is stripped back and it allows the power of the lyrics shine through. If it feels a little bit somber there is no denying that it is honest and for many people will also be relatable.

This is quickly followed by ‘Something in the Heavens’ that examines grief in the wake of the loss of someone special – but also the hope of meeting up with them again. Once again it has been beautifully written and is one of the strongest tracks. There is a lovely fragility to the song as a whole that makes the listener sit up and pay attention.

Meanwhile, the third track ‘Almost’ is heartbreaking in the way in which it examines the way in which it focuses on the way on which it is a struggle to let go and move forward with life. It is once again quiet, understated and thought provoking. You can really hear on this track just how deeply personal it is.

Meanwhile, the final song ‘The Day That I Die’ is the most deep and insightful (in my opinion) on the Ep. It is clear that it was written at a really dark period of Capaldi’s life and it is a powerful way to conclude. On this song, Capaldi’s vocals sound at their most raw but equally the lyrics while focusing on mental health and the dark places it can take you, it does equally offer a perspective on how to navigate difficult times and trying to survive. There is certainly a lot to take away from the song.

Overall, this EP while focusing on some dark and heavy themes, showcases the power and thought that Capaldi puts into his music. It is certainly of high quality musically.
