The composer has created some truly memorable scores ranging from romantic films all the way through to historical epics. Here’s a few of our favourites…
The Holiday:
Part of this film’s appeal for me is Hans Zimmer’s gorgeously delicate score that has a charm all of its own. It really compliments the story that is unfolding on screen perfectly and it is so easy to associate each part of the score with a particular moment in the film. There is also warmth, romance and playfulness that ensures that you feel all of the right emotions at the right times.
Gladiator:
This score is filled with richness and depth, adding plenty of layers emotionally as the the film comes to a climax. It is such a fascinating score to listen to, showcasing his great skill of enhancing a scene with powerful music that ensures the audience is thoroughly captivated. This combined with Lisa Gerrard’s haunting vocals it is more than enough to send a chill down the spine.
Pirates of the Caribbean:
While Klaus Badelt received credit for the first Pirates film, Hans did oversee that one as well as three others in the film series. There is a real rousing nature to the score that captures the liveliness and spirited nature of the story – even enhancing the character Jack Sparrow’s escapades brilliantly to add a sense of adventure and chaos.
The Lion King:
For a children’s film, this score is filled with such drama and seriousness that gives the story extra power. The use of African vocal elements in key moments is also inspired to capture the key parts with even more meaning – it is an extraordinary achievement in terms of the composition and easily one of the most instantly recognisable scores that he has created.
Top Gun: Maverick:
This high energy and action packed film needed a score to match and the composer was more than up for the challenge here. You get a real thrill listening as well as seeing the action unfolding in front of you and it has been perfectly put into place as well as showing just how versatile he is when it comes to creating a film score.
Sherlock Holmes:
This instantly recognisable score is wonderfully quirky and in many ways sounds like a musical form of how Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock’s mind works. I love the hints of folkiness and playfulness. The sounds and music that has been created here shouldn’t work as they seem to fight against one another – yet somehow it lends itself beautifully to the various action sequences as well as the lighter moments between Sherlock and Watson. It comes across as bold and innovative.
