Here’s a guide to some of the films to look out for in May…
The Devil Wears Prada 2:
Finally! The sequel that we have been waiting for is out in cinemas on the 1st May. Based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2013 novel Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, the film sees the return of all of our favourite characters as they return to the world of Runway Magazine. Expect high fashion and deliciously witty dialogue (the trailer shows the script is just as sharp as ever).
Power Ballad:
Writer and director John Carney (Sing Street, Once) returns with a brand new comedy starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas. Released on the 29th May, the story follows a wedding band singer who teams up with a boyband star and end up having a late-night jam session. But when the boy band star turns one of the wedding band singer’s songs into a hit to reignite his career, a battle is on to give credit where it is due.
500 Miles:
This drama film directed by Morgan Matthews and starring Bill Nighy is set to be released in cinemas on the 15th May. It has been adapted from the novel Charlie and Me by Mark Lowery. It follows the story of Charlie and Finn who are estranged from their grandfather until an event makes them seek him out again.
The Sheep Detectives:
This upcoming murder mystery comedy based on the 2005 novel Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann is set to be released in cinemas on the 8th May. Directed by Kyle Balda, the film has a strong ensemble including: Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson and Molly Gordon. The story sounds like a real and hilarious treat as well!
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu:
Set for release in cinemas on the 22nd May, this latest instalment in the Star Wars series is set following the fall of the Galactic Empire. Written by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Noah Kloor, it is also a continuation of the Disney+ television series The Mandalorian.
Leonora in the Morning Light:
Thor Klein & Lena Vurma’s film will be released in cinemas on the 29th may and follows the story of Leonora who breaks free from convention and plunges into the surrealist circles of Salvador Dalí and André Breton. There she embarks on a passionate, volatile relationship with the charismatic artist Max Ernst. Along the way though she has to confront her demons both past and present. Based on the book by Elena Poniatowska, it follows the true story of surrealist painter, Leonora Carrington.
