We round up the reviews for the musical, which will play in London until the 6th September.

The Reviews Hub: “What lingers is how much Hot Mess manages to pull off without ever seeming to strain for it. By the curtain, you have somehow walked through the entire sweep of human history, given a genuinely affecting love story, and handed a climate warning… and you have laughed almost the whole way through. At a moment when so much of the West End leans on borrowed IP and safe bets, here is a new British musical that is gloriously, stubbornly its own: original, big-hearted, and brave enough to be daft in the service of something that matters.”
Musical Theatre Review: “Steers has long been one of musical theatre’s most charismatic performers, and from the off there is a sense that she has the ability to embody the whole planet. Her vocal depth and range impress from the outset, commanding Shankho Chaudhuri’s circular set – initially bare with a few mosses and plants, but increasing cluttered as Humanity takes over – with a blistering performance.”
All That Dazzles: “Still, it’s a very fun show that doesn’t fail to entertain, ‘weather’ it’s Godfrey’s electrifying score, Coote’s witty book, or the two rock-solid performances. I’m over the moon that Hot Mess seems to be continuing to evolve, but, like any complicated relationship, this is the stage when it’s truly figuring out what it is, after the Honeymoon period of the Fringe.”
notesfromrowh.com: “Hot Mess: The Musical it is a bold, inventive, and thoroughly entertaining piece of theatre—one that uses humour, heart, and certified bops to explore one of the most pressing issues of our time. It does so with impressive style and imagination.”
WhatsOnStage: “A hot, sexy and unexpectedly poignant musical that feels both entertaining and urgently relevant.”
Theatre & Tonic: “It is hilarious, heartfelt and an incredibly astute musical. Hot Mess is bursting full of witty zingers, brilliant songs and a truly phenomenal dual cast. Don’t miss out on London’s hottest new musical this summer in a fabulously air-conditioned theatre!”
A Young(ish) Perspective: “Funny, relevant and skilfully executed, it’s hard to fault this snappy 90-minute piece, and is highly worth escaping the London heat to see.”
London Theatre.co.uk “Of course, we know where their story is heading. But that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. Godfrey’s songs are absolute bangers, and you’ll leave the theatre still humming along. “Tomorrow” sees Humanity promising to be a better boyfriend – in other words, to be greener – but “tomorrow”. Meanwhile, Earth’s show-stopping “My House” is a defiant climactic roar that finally expels Humanity for good. The bouncy hope shown in the early number “Better With Time” all too quickly fades away.”
Pink Prince Theatre: “The set by Shankho Chaudhuri and lighting by Ryan Joseph Stafford were pretty simple, but worked perfectly. The minimalist, neon-streaked staging keeps the focus entirely on the electric chemistry between the two leads, while the sharp, dynamic lighting changes beautifully mirror the shifting climate eras. Coote‘s direction filled the stage wonderfully, ensuring that even with just two actors, the space always feels massive, alive, and bursting with energy.”
Broadway World: “Hot Mess is an exciting new production, showcasing some real talent from the entire creative team. And, if the current temperatures weren’t enough of a reminder that we’ve really messed up the planet, Hot Mess is here to really hammer the message home. As such, it’s a production you should be sure to catch, before it’s too late. Aka, before we burn the entire planet down.”
