We chatted to Jemma about starring in Mammy’s House at Upstairs at the Gatehouse this September.
What can audiences expect from the show?
I think an audience can expect a really heartwarming and heartbreaking show. It follows a queer found family over many years, and like all families, they fight and laugh with each other in equal measure. You’ll recognise yourself in at least one of the characters!
What was it about the history behind London’s Irish LGBTQ+ community that captured your attention?
I think the thing that surprised me most was just the sheer number of Irish people treated in London. Some wards were up to 50% Irish. It’s never really talked about by anyone either side of the Irish sea. So many wonderful young people were lost.
How has it been watching this show develop?
As an actor, I’ve come in late enough to the process, but I’m so excited to see how much the play is really coming to life with everyone playing their roles. It feels so real, and vital. I know the audience will love the characters as much as we all do.
