NEWS: Nanny McPhee Musical to Have World Premiere in London

It has been announced that a musical adaptation of Nanny McPhee will have its world premiere in London in 2027. Further details such as theatre, dates and casting have yet to be confirmed.

Based on the Nanny McPhee films and the Nurse Matilda character created by Christianna Brand and Edward Ardizzone, this will be the first time the story will be staged.

Featuring a book by Emma Thompson (who also appeared in the original film and wrote the story for the film), the plot sees the arrival of the mysterious and magical Nanny McPhee at the Brown family home. Here, she encounters a group of unruly children who have managed to drive away every nanny that they have had. With a desperate father, a donkey and baby also involved – can Nanny McPhee help restore order to the household?

The original film released in 2005, also starred  Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, Kelly Macdonald, Imelda Staunton and Thomas Brodie-Sangster. It was then followed by Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang in 20210.

As well as having written the book for the musical, Thompson is also providing original lyrics alongside Gary Clark. Clark, the frontman of Danny Wilson, who has written the music for the stage and film adaptations of Sing Street.

The production is set to be directed by Katy Rudd, whose recent credits include Ballet Shoes and The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Set and costume design will come from Tony and Olivier Award-winning designer Rob Howell, known for Matilda the Musical, while choreography is by Ellen Kane, who choreographed on the film adaptation of Matilda the Musical.

In addition, the creative team will also include: orchestrations and arrangements by Simon Hale, with music supervision and additional arrangements by Nigel Lilley. Lighting design is by Howard Hudson, sound design is by Ian Dickinson for Autograph, illusions are by Chris Fisher, puppetry is by Samuel Wyer and projections are by Andrzej Goulding. Casting is by the WhatsOnStage Award-winning Natalie Gallacher for Pippa Aillon and Natalie Gallacher Casting, with general management by Playful Productions.
