The film marks Van Dyke’s directorial debut and is based on the 2012 New Yorker article “Atonement” by Dexter Filkins.
A new trailer has now been released for new Iraq war film Atonement, which is set to be released in US cinemas in October, with a UK and Ireland release date to be announced.
Written and directed by Reed Van Dyk, Atonement follows the story of the Khachaturian family, who were displaced from their home by U.S. military action during the early days of the Iraq War. Having gone to stay with relatives, their lives are upheaved again when another bombing erupts nearby, they decide to return to their home across the city. As they navigate the war-torn streets of Baghdad, the family is trapped in a firefight between U.S. Marines and insurgents – with tragedy devastating the family.
As years pass, one Marine who was caught up in the events of that day seeks to reconcile with the Khachaturian matriarch and her surviving family members with the help of New Yorker journalist Lou.
The film is set to star Boyd Holbrook, Hiam Abbass, and Kenneth Branagh.
