The musical will return to the New York stage in autumn 2027 to mark the anniversary.
It has been announced that a new production of Annie will run on Broadway in the autumn of next year to mark the musical’s 50th anniversary.
This new production of Annie will be directed by Sam Pinkleton (Oh, Mary!, Ceilidh) with further details about the revival to be announced soon.
The musical features a book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, and lyrics by Martin Charnin, who also directed the original Broadway production. It was originally based on the comic strip “Little Orphan Annie.”
Annie first premiered at the Goodspeed Opera House in 1976 before a pre-Broadway engagement at the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The musical opened on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre (now known as the Neil Simon Theatre) on April 21, 1977.
The musical was nominated for 11 Tony Awards at the 1977 Tony Awards, winning seven including: Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical (Dorothy Loudon), Best Choreography, Best Scenic Design, and Best Costume Design.
