Following the huge popularity of this year’s tour, the musical will head off on another UK tour from August 2017, opening at Cardiff’s Millennium Centre.
The new tour will see the show visiting over thirty venues across the country, including stops in Cardiff, Dublin, Manchester and Birmingham and touring until early 2018.
Talking about the news, producer Mark Goucher said: “I am incredibly proud of this production of Hairspray and thrilled that it will be travelling the country again. The universal appeal of this heart-warming show has continued to delight us all, with families and musical theatre lovers alike packing out theatres night after night.”
With iconic songs including ‘Good morning Baltimore’ and ‘Welcome to the 60’s’, written by Academy Award, Tony and Emmy winning duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the musical follows Tracy Turnblad as she follows her dreams to dance her way onto national television.
The production is directed by Paul Kerryson, with choreography by Drew McOnie. Casting for the new UK tour has yet to be confirmed.
It’s Baltimore 1962, where Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, is on a mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national TV. Tracy’s audition makes her a local star and soon she is using her new-found fame to fight for equality, bagging local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way.
Hairspray the musical is based on the 1988 film of the same name which starred Divine and Ricki Lake by cult filmmaker John Waters. It originally opened on Broadway in 2002, going on to win eight Tony awards. The show then transferred to the Shaftesbury Theatre in London in 2007, winning four Olivier awards. A film version of the musical was also released in 2007, starring John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer.
Hairspray will embark on its new UK tour from the 16th August 2017 until the 19th May 2018. For more information and to book tickets visit: http://www.hairsprayuktour.com/.
