Singer Liza Pulman knows how to put on an engaging and entertaining show that covers a full range of Barbra Streisand’s music that she has released (so far) in her career.
There is no question in this elegantly put together show, that Liza Pulman has quite clearly studied Streisand’s technique and style vocally, all the while amusing and engaging audiences with anecdote’s of how Barbra Streisand rose to fame.
But Pulman also makes it clear that this isn’t about the singer’s life story or a tribute act, she effectively examines what it was about Streisand’s voice that has captured millions of fans attention over the years. By the carefully selected song choices and brilliant orchestrations, audiences listening to Pulman really get a better understanding of Streisand’s talent.
The first half of the programme is a lively affair, with Pulman performing songs such as the iconic ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’ and ‘Miss Marmelstein’ with great playfulness and joy that is infectious to listen to. Meanwhile, the second half focuses on the emotional side to Streisand’s repertoire including ‘People’ and ‘ The Way We Were’ and really highlights the depth and range of not only of Streisand’s capabilities but also Pulman’s own vocals that have stark similarities.
By combining a mixture of playfulness and tenderness, the show is beautifully balanced musically and interspersed with Pulman’s great sense of humour and personality (known to many thanks to her performances in Fascinating Aida) it is a show which completely immerses the audience from beginning to end.
It is also made very clear to the audience just how much respect and awe that Pulman has for the singer and her talent which in turn transfers to the audience, leaving them almost feeling as though the show has barely touched the surface of Streisand’s career.
All in all, Liza Sings Streisand is a relaxing, engaging and entertaining show that manages to capture the essence of Streisand’s career in an hour and a half.
