Shows Opening: October 2017

Here’s Love London Love Culture’s monthly guide to shows to book for including both musicals and plays:

1. The Toxic Avenger, The Arts Theatre: following a successful run at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, this popular musical returns to London for a limited season. Previewing from the 28th September, the show will officially be welcomed back to the capital on the 2nd October.

Toxie is a seven-foot mutant freak with superhuman strength and a supersized heart to match. He’s out to save New Jersey, end global warming, win the heart of the prettiest (blindest) librarian in town and get home in time for dinner in this toxic love story with an environmental twist.

2. Labour of Love, Noel Coward Theatre: this is the world premiere production of James Graham’s latest play, directed by Jeremy Herrin. The production reunites Graham and Herrin following their collaboration on This House. In previews from the 27th September, the production officially opens on the 3rd October.

Labour MP David Lyons cares about modernisation and “electability”… his constituency agent, Jean Whittaker cares about principles and her community. Set away from the Westminster bubble in the party’s traditional northern heartlands, this is a clash of philosophy, culture and class against the backdrop of the Labour Party over 25 years as it moves from Kinnock through Blair into Corbyn… and beyond?

3. Heisenberg: The Uncertainty Principle, Wyndham’s Theatre: director Marianne Elliott and playwright Simon Stephens reunite for this UK premiere of this new play, starring Anne-Marie Duff and Kenneth Cranham.
In this uncertain world, who can predict what brings people together? When two strangers meet by chance amidst the bustle of a crowded London train station, their lives are changed forever.

4. Hair, The Vaults:  this 50th anniversary production directed by Jonathan O’Boyle transfers to London from the Hope Mill Theatre. It opens for previews from the 4th October officially opening on the 10th October.

It’s 1967 and HAIR‘s hippie-hood youngsters live as The Tribe, in the East Village of New York: yearning to change the world, questioning authority and the American flag. They are wild, colourful, free, sexually liberated beautiful people who join in protest and song – under the shadow of the Vietnam War.

The musical is the wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Mary Shelley classic, sees Frederick Frankenstein, an esteemed New York brain surgeon and professor, inherit a castle and laboratory in Transylvania from his deranged genius grandfather, Victor Von Frankenstein. He now faces a dilemma – does he continue to run from his family’s tortured past or does he stay in Transylvania to carry on his grandfather’s mad experiments reanimating the dead and, in the process, fall in love with his sexy lab assistant Inga?

Leonard Vole is accused of murdering a widow to inherit her wealth. The stakes are high – will Leonard survive the shocking witness testimony, will he be able to convince the jury, and you of his innocence and escape the hangman’s noose? 
7. Venus in Fur, Theatre Royal Haymarket:  Patrick Marber will direct Natalie Dormer and David Oakes in this West End production of David Ives’s comedy of desire and fantasy. The show will officially open on the 17th October with previews from the 6th October.

Enigmatic actress Vanda Jordan appears unannounced for an audition with director Thomas Novachek. She’s determined to land the leading role in his new production – despite seeming wrong for the part. Over one evening in downtown Manhattan their charged meeting becomes a seductive dance to the end.
