Making its West End debut at the Piccadilly Theatre later this month, Strictly Ballroom the Musical is based on Baz Luhrmann’s classic 1992 film and features many of the songs from the original soundtrack.
When maverick championship ballroom dancer Scott defies all the rules of competition to follow his heart, he teams up with left-footed partner Fran to win the Pan Pacifics his way. The musical features the film’s classic break-into-song numbers such as Love is in the Air, Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps and Time After Time alongside electrifying new songs.
The cast is led by Jonny Labey (Eastenders) as Scott Hastings and Zizi Strallen (Mary Poppins, Follies, Cats, Dirty Dancing, Hairspray and Chicago) as Fran. Will Young stars as Wally Strand – a newly created role for the singer and the musical. They are joined by Anna Francolini as Shirley Hastings and Gerard Horan as Barry Fife.
Meanwhile, the cast is also set to include: Michelle Bishop as Pam Short, Ivan De Freitas as Merv, Gabriela Garcia (In The Heights, Ghost) as Vanessa Cronin, Charlotte Gooch as Tina Sparkle, Richard Grieve as Les Kendall, Liam Marcellino as Wayne Burns, Stephen Matthews as Doug Hastings, Fernando Mira as Rico, Eve Polycarpou as Abuela, Lauren Stroud as Liz Holt & Gary Watson as Ken Railings, Chris Bennett, Chrissy Brooke, Hannah Fairclough, Selina Hamilton, Christopher D Hunt, Luke Jackson, Justin-Lee Jones, Robin Kent, Jacob Maynard, Leanne Pinder, Tinovimbanashe Sibanda & Dale White.
The production originated in Australia where it was created by Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin. This West End premiere production is directed and choreographed by Drew McOnie, whose choreography for In the Heights won him an Olivier Award in 2016.
Strictly Ballroom the Musical features a book by Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce, set design by Soutra Gilmour, costume design by Catherine Martin, lighting design by Howard Hudson and sound design by Gareth Owen.
