With the news that Waitress is coming to the West End next year, Love London Love Culture’s Emma Clarendon took a listen to the soundtrack…

Waitress

Based on the 2007 film of the same name, Waitress the musical first headed to Broadway in 2016 with a cast including Jessie Mueller, Drew Gehling, and Joe Tippett as well as  music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles.

Even just by listening to the soundtrack, there is already much to look forward to about the production coming to London next year. From the uplifting and charming ‘What’s Inside’, featuring some lovely baking references all the way through to the heartfelt and poignant ‘She Used to Be Mine’, Sara Bareilles has created a thoughtful and enjoyable score that captures the central character Jenna’s story perfectly.

Each song plays a strong and emotional part in driving the story forward as well as vocals that are consistently impressive as heard on ‘It Only Takes a Taste’ and ‘You Will Still be Mine’. But there is also plenty of fun to be had with songs such as ‘The Negative’ and ‘What Baking Can Do’  that capture the feelings of the characters at particular moments particularly well.

There is a a great variety of styles in terms of musical style, with ‘Never Ever Getting Rid of Me’ and ‘You Will Still be Mine’ proving to be great surprises on a soundtrack that is overall quite sentimental  but always enjoyable to listen to.

Every song works well together, seamlessly woven together to create a joyful, playful and emotional experience, brought together by some rich and powerful vocals provided by the cast led by Jessie Mueller as Jenna. Her rendition of ‘She Used to be Mine’ is soulful and is a real delight to listen to as is her performance of ‘Dear Baby’. Elsewhere, Keala Settle delivers a powerful performance of ‘I Didn’t Plan it’  and the harmonies on ‘Club Knocked Up’ are impressive.

Overall, this is a soundtrack that is a confection of delight that won’t fail to put a smile on your face or tug at the heartstrings. An enjoyable listen.
