First Impressions…Barbie

The new film based on the famous toy set to be released in cinemas in July has released a brand new trailer. Emma Clarendon shares her thoughts…

I never thought that I would a) see the day that a live action film based Barbie being released or b) being this excited about it – but on the basis on the latest trailer released by Warner Bros. Pictures – it looks like a whole lot of fun!

Yes it would be easy to wonder what plot line (if there is one) there will be in bringing the beloved doll to life, but I feel as though given the nature of the fact this is a toy being brought to life – we should all use our imagination and just have fun with a film that is clear already to see isn’t meant to be taken seriously and to just have fun with.

Co-written by Greta Gerwig (who has really come into her own as a director, having worked on of course the likes of Lady Bird and Little Women) and  Noah Baumbach, you can tell the script will be filled with plenty subtle but cheeky moments of humour that will hopefully get the balance between appealing to children and of course adults feeling nostalgic.

It has to be said that visually in my opinion the film looks fantastic – filled with bright bubblegum style colour that captures the happy and playful nature of the toy. Yes it feels cheesy (and some might find it over the top) but it stays true to the nature of the toy – there is an attention to detail that is impressive (and perhaps with Mattel – the company behind Barbie – onboard not surprising) and will really enhance the nostalgia that will lie at the heart of the film perfectly.

Meanwhile, I also feel like that the casting is really on point: Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as the main Barbie and Ken (there are several variations of each of the characters) just seem to be the right leads and have clearly thrown themselves into the roles with great enthusiasm that won’t fail to put a smile on audience’s faces. But the supporting cast also look great as well, with the likes of Helen Mirren, Will Ferrell, Emerald Fennell, America Ferrera and  Rhea Perlman also involved – all very exciting!

Overall vibes from the trailer? Still as enthusiastic as ever to see this – but really hoping that the film really lives up to the expectations that it will have undoubtedly set with this trailer!
