Love London Love Culture’s Film Picks: 2024

While release dates might change given that the recent SAG-AFTRA has only just (tentatively ended) – here’s a few films we can’t wait to catch next year!

Poor Things: Yorgos Lanthimos’s new film is set to cause quite a stir when it is released in cinemas in January. Known for his unique film making style which has fascinated audiences for films such at The Favorite and The Lobster, this latest release based on the novel of Alasdair Gray and seemingly comes across as a refreshing take on the Frankenstein story which can’t help but intrigue. With Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo at the centre of the cast, it set to be one of the quirkiest films to be released in 2024.

Mean Girls: since being transformed into a Broadway musical (which is also heading to the West End next year!), Mean Girls has found a whole new audience of fans. This is certainly going to be a feisty and biting look at society and attitudes towards a number of issues. It is pleasing to see that Renée Rapp, who played the role of Regina George who played the role on Broadway will take the role in the film – but potentially it would have been lovely to see more of the original cast from the Broadway production involved as well. Given the trailer it seems that many of the original moments in the original film are retained, let’s see how it adapts for a new audience!

Inside Out 2: Let’s be honest – is this not the sequel that we have all been waiting for since the original film captured hearts and minds in 2015? The power of this original film was to allow us all to get in touch with our inner emotions and was an impressive feat of work from Pixar. This time round a new emotion (anxiety) is included and given the state of the world, once again shows just how in tune Pixar is in terms of ensuring the stories they create reflect the world in which we are living in emotionally. There will be potentially something that we can all take away from this film…

Beetlejuice 2: This follow up to the 1988 comedy will be intriguing to watch for so many reasons. While it could be argued that the original might not have aged as well as could be hoped, this sequel might give audiences a story that will provide perfect horror comedy bliss! With a cast including many of the original such as Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton, it will be intriguing to see what Tim Burton has to offer here…

Mufasa: The Lion King: this spin off to the Disney classic looks set to explore the background to Mufasa’s story. While details of the film have yet to be confirmed, the cast is set to include Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, Seth Rogen as Pumbaaa and Billy Eichner as Timon. Will it add depth to the original film or will it stand on its own feet – that remains to be seen….

Wicked: Part One: this big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical is certainly one of the most anticipated for 2024 – particularly given its starry cast which includes Ariana Grande as Glinda, Michelle Yeoh as Madam Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as  Fiyero Tigelaar and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba for example. Giving the back story of how Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West, there is certainly plenty of magic to expected from this film…
