Looking for a cosy and romantic film to watch this Valentine’s Day? Here’s a few of our picks…

Emma (2020): based on Jane Austen’s novel, this lively adaptation directed by  Autumn de Wilde, from a screenplay by Eleanor Catton, captures the romance, the misunderstandings and the spirit of the original story but seen through more contemporary eyes to make for delightful viewing. What makes this story so lovely is all the twists and turns along the way, the romantic triangles that emerge and how it eventually resolves itself – its difficult not to fall for this film.

Ever After (1998): this in (our personal opinion) is the best adaptation of Cinderella. At its centre is a strong character Danielle (our Cinderella in this film) whose passion gets her into trouble but feels suitably modern enough to make her still relatable today, while the story still feels suitably romantic and fairytale like in the way in which it unfolds. There are some lovely set pieces in the film and a strong emotional core to it that makes it easy to be drawn to the story and characters.

Notting Hill (1999): this classic Richard Curtis film is just a joy to watch, with its relatable characters as well as a typical British sense of humour. The cast themselves all bring a lovely chemistry to the characters relationships that makes the finale just a joy to watch! A true British romantic comedy with plenty of heart – it is difficult not to fall for it no matter how many times you watch it!

Roman Holiday (1953): for those who like their classic black and white films, this joyous Audrey Hepburn film is filled with charm and plenty of lovely moments between the central couple as they go around Rome and although they hide their true identities from each other you really believe in Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck’s developing romance. The ending is really quite moving as well – it is a real classic.

Ghost ( 1990): while it could be argued that Romeo & Juliet is the most romantic story of all time, we feel that Ghost is the modern day equivalent. Filled with tragedy, love and betrayal as well as humour to give audiences a little break from the intensity of the unfolding story, it is filled with strong emotions that never fails to pack a punch as you watch the twists and turns of the story unfolding.
