Disney boss Bob Iger confirmed the unexpected news, with a live- action remake of the first film in the works.
It has been announced that a sequel to the 2016 film is set to be released on the 27th November, having originally being billed to be released as a television series.
Set on the fictional Polynesian island of Motunui, the first film saw Moana teaming up with demigod Maui to try and save her people. The sequel is set to see Moana embark on a dangerous mission that will take her to the far seas of Oceania after getting a call from her ancestors.
The 2016 film made more that $680 million (£538 million) at the box office, going on to be nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“How Far I’ll Go”).

Directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear (replacing Lin- Manuel Miranda), Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina. It is expected that Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson will reprise their roles as Moana and Maui, with further casting and details yet to be announced.
