NEWS: Audra McDonald to Head Cast in New Broadway Revival of Gypsy

The production is set to begin performances at the Majestic Theatre on the 21st November, with opening night taking place on the 19th December.

It has been confirmed that six time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald will lead the cast as Madame Rose in a new Broadway production of Gypsy heading to the stage later this year.

Based on the 1957 memoirs of striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, the musical features a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It tracks the mother and daughter relationship between Rose and Gypsy Rose Lee and features songs such as ‘if Momma Were Married’ and ‘You Gotta Have a Gimmick’.

With further casting yet to be announced, this revival is set to be directed by  George C. Wolfe and choreographed by Camille A. Brown. Wolfe and McDonald previously on on the Broadway musical Shuffle Along, Or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed, which ran in 2016.

The musical originally made its Broadway debut in 1959 with Ethel Merman starring as Rose. Since then it has been revived four times including performances from  Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, and Patti LuPone.

More information about this revival has yet to be confirmed.
