We round up the reviews for Lindsay Posner’s production, starring Dominic West.
WhatsOnStage: *** “Aspects of the drama – the desperation of the migrants, the shrinking nature of poverty and a man’s inability to examine his own nature – resonate, even if the specific circumstances have dated. People still gasp when Eddie commits the ultimate betrayal. It is a gripping story, well-told. Just as Miller intended.”
Time Out: *** “But ‘A View from the Bridge’ is a tragedy, and I don’t think Posner’s production really manages to square its almost jaunty early tone with that fact.”
The Telegraph: **** “This is a gripping revival of a Miller masterpiece – and West can take his place alongside the great past interpreters of the central role.”
The Guardian: **** “Every actor shines as brightly as West. There is an insightful performance from Kate Fleetwood as Eddie’s wife, Beatrice, who feels the house’s Freudian buzz, and Towle is just as compelling as Catherine, full of girlish exuberance but slowly becoming her own woman.”
London Theatre.co.uk: **** “This classic staging of Miller’s play is accomplished, but it could afford to excise or adapt some elements, such as the exposition offered by narrator and lawyer Alfieri, which needs to be woven into the production more creatively.”
The Independent: **** “‘The Crown’ star is a man in freefall in a Miller revival that works its magic by being that rare thing: a really decent production of a really great play.”
The Stage: *** “Revival of Arthur Miller’s classic lacks danger, but still feels timely.”
Evening Standard: *** “Though the theme of immigration makes the story feel newly contemporary, Lindsay Posner’s production, which originated at Bath’s Ustinov Studio, feels staid and old-fashioned. It sometimes inspires titters when it should provoke shock and awe.”
A View from the Bridge will play at the Theatre Royal Haymarket until the 3rd August. You can book tickets via Love Theatre.com, London Box Office or London Theatre Direct.
