Here’s a guide to a few of the shows opening in September to look out for…
Alice’s Adventure’s in Wonderland, Royal Opera House: fall down the rabbit hole with the Royal Ballet’s take on Lewis Carroll’s beloved story, which features choreography by Christopher Wheeldon and music by Joby Talbot. The various casts throughout the run are set to include: Francesca Hayward, Viola Pantuso, Marcelino Sambé, William Bracewell, Matthew Ball, Ella Newton Severgnin and Cesar Corrales. The Real Thing, Old Vic Theatre: officially opening on the 3rd September, this revival of Tom Stoppard’s play stars James McArdle (Mare of Easttown, The Tragedy of Macbeth), Bel Powley (A Small Light, The Morning Show), Oliver Johnstone (All My Sons, Henry V) and Susan Wokoma (Cheaters, Enola Holmes 1 and 2). It is directed by Max Webster and is a story of love, infidelity and the stories we tell. The production will run until the 26th October.

Never Let Me Go, Rose Theatre: this world premiere stage production based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel will have a run at the Rose Theatre from the 20th September until the 12 October, ahead of runs at the Royal & Derngate, Malvern Theatres, Bristol Old Vic, and Chichester Festival Theatre. It is a story that looks at what happens when memory and reality collide, while questioning what it means to be human.
Why am I So Single?, Garrick Theatre: if you love the musical SIX, then you might want to head to the Garrick Theatre to catch Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’s latest musical about two best friends who attempt to discover the real reason as to why they are so single. Booking until the 13th February 2025 it definitely sounds like the perfect girls night out!

Buyer & Cellar, King’s Head Theatre: why not head to the King’s Head Theatre in Islington to catch this production of Jonathan Tolins one man show, a comedy that looks at the cost of fame and the oddest of jobs. Having had an off-broadway run, the play heads to the King’s Head Theatre from the 18th September until the 19th October starring Rob Madge!
Our Country’s Good, Lyric Hammersmith: from the 5th September until the 5th October, audiences will be able to catch this revival of Timberlake Wertenbaker’s play, directed by Rachel O’Riordan (A Doll’s House, Iphigenia in Splott). This revival of the play has offered Wertenbaker an opportunity to revisit her play – with the help of consultant Ian Michael to honour the voice and history of Australia’s First Nations People to examine power in the British justice system.
Waiting for Godot, Theatre Royal Haymarket: James McDonald brings Samuel Beckett’s play back to the West End in a new production that stars Lucian Msamati (Game of Thrones) and Ben Whishaw (Paddington), Tom Edden (Crazy For You) and Jonathan Slinger (title roles in Richard II and Richard III in RSC Histories). The production will run from the 13th September until the 14th December.
