The band’s latest album feels a little bit light but there is still some beautiful moments to be found.
It has to be said that Coldplay’s latest album is not quite what I expected (now that I have finally had a chance to sit down and listen to it) – it feels a bit more demure and understated – just lacking in a few of stadium filling anthems that we have come to expect from them.
That is not to say that there isn’t quality to this album, the opening and title track of the album is really rather soothing in the way it places music rather than lyrics at the centre of it until a good way into the song which suggests a different tone and mood to the music that Coldplay are looking to make.
Particular highlights on the album include ‘feelslikeimfallinginlove’ which has a vibrant energy to it and has an ear worm quality to it that is really pleasing to listen to. Equally, while feeling sentimental, there is a sincerity to the lyrics that keeps the listener invested in the song and makes it relatable.
Meanwhile, ‘All My Love’ and ‘Jupiter’ are equally strong songs on which Coldplay sound like themselves – both come across as soulful and easy to engage with lyrically. This makes for quite a contrast to the way in which ‘AETERNA’ and ‘🌈’ come across – more experimental and bold – absolutely but equally it just feels it is lacking something behind it that gives them more depth and meaning.
While there are moments musically that feel a little bit sombre and cautious (‘One World’), there is something that is still eloquent about the album overall that makes the songs all tie in nicely together.
Yes, perhaps there are aspects of the album that come across as slightly repetitive lyrically and it feels slightly light overall, but there is still hints of what make Coldplay so memorable to make it an enjoyable listen.
